There is no time for rest after his Oscar
winning dark comedy/drama 'Birdman', as director Alejandro González Iñárritu is
coming back this 2015 for another film that has movie fans excited. The film
titled 'The Revenant' is a historical survival/thriller drama that chronicles
the real-life story of Hugh Glass. His life has been portrayed on the big
screen before, but this time he will be brought to life by Leonardo DiCaprio
under the direction of Iñárritu.
The
director reunites with award winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. He is
known for his work in bringing the fear of being stranded in outer-space to the
big screen in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, for which he won an Academy Award. He
also helped capture the vibrant environment of New York's theatre scene in
Iñárritu's Birdman.
With
The Revenant, the duo plan to recreate the North American wilderness during the
1800s by trying out a different approach in shooting, using only natural lightfrom the filming location in a remote region of Calgary. This method only left
them a few hours a day of filming, which caused the production to be extended
to April. Iñárritu admitted in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly
that this shooting technique could have easily backfired against him or work
extremely well. "It’s a very experimental thing that we’re doing here…I’m
now addicted to doing things that can fail horribly or maybe that can give us a
surprise. We are all into it." the director said. Judging by the first
trailer released, the technique might have been brilliantly implemented.
According
to 20th Century Fox's synopsis, The Revenant is "an immersive and visceral
cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the
extraordinary power of the human spirit.” The trailer depicts plenty of action,
featuring DiCaprio as Glass facing off against Tom Hardy, who plays Glass'
friend-turned-enemy John Fitzgerald. Glass vows revenge against Fitzgerald
after he betrays him, robs him and leaves him to die in the wild. The trapper
also fights a bear, and treads the vicious winter, travelling more than 200
miles in order to live and find redemption.
The
film's small but exceptional cast also include Domhnall Gleeson and Will
Poulter. Iñárritu wrote the script together with Mark L. Smith, and drew
inspiration from Michael Punke's book about Glass - "The Revenant: A
Tale of Revenge".
With
the brilliant use of the filming location plus Alejandro González Iñárritu's
direction, 'The Revenant' promises to be an exceptional film that is in the
running for another Oscar award. The film has a limited theatrical release in
the United States on December 25, 2015, and is planned for a nationwide release
on January 8, 2016.
