The Fantastic Four reboot is about to premiere in a few weeks, and comic book fans will finally get a chance to see Director Josh Trank's take on the much younger versions of the four heroes. There are however a few concerns regarding the film, not just in the heroes but in their main villain, the team's arch-enemy from the start - Doctor Doom. We first got a look at him when a photo from the filming location was released online wearing the iconic Doom garb, now we're close to seeing him in the big screen.
He was previously played by Julian Mcmahon in the 2005 franchise, and although the film was a critical failure it did gave us a Doom that was just as crazy as in the comics. Now that Trank aims to reboot the franchise with younger characters, he has cast Toby Kebbell, from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fame, to bring the character to the big screen.
As fans have set their eyes in the impending battle of Doom against the Fantastic Four (which is going to be epic according to Trank), Toby Kebbell apparently has his goal of fighting even greater battles. CinemaBlend sat down with him at Comic-Con to talk about the future potential of the franchise, and the fact that Doctor Doom was the main villain of Marvel's first family. Here's what he has to say: "He's pretty much THE Marvel villain".
He continued on to explain "You know he destroys Thor. He punches up all those people. I don’t know what the political… I can’t get into this. You’re going to write this, and I’m going to get destroyed. They’re going to sue me, but look: can someone at Marvel and someone at Fox talk, and with Doom, just lend him out, like football? You can have him for the World Cup, that’s it! Then just let me go - let me go and destroy Thor, for goodness sake. I’d love to work with those boys."
Kebbell isn't the first actor in the Fox franchise to express this idea that they make a deal with Marvel. Hugh Jackman also talked about his role as Wolverine and how he would love to see a crossover between these two worlds. There were even rumors that he was at one point on the filming location of Avengers, but that wasn't confirmed. And now that Marvel is working with Sony to bring Spider-Man to the fold, it's only a matter of time before Fox start to consider this idea.
In a perfect world where different studios didn't own the rights for different characters, there probably would be no Thanos for the third film. We would have Doctor Doom. He is one of the most complicated, intelligent and egomaniacal supervillain, not to mention the most dangerous in the Marvel universe. He's been a trouble for many superheroes from the comics that it would be a brilliant show to see if they ever adapt him for the Marvel movies. But since this isn't a perfect world, that likely wouldn't happen.
If Fox ever do consider the thought, it would probably be for a long time since they've just started their Fantastic Four reboot. It's more likely that Fox has other plans for their franchises, probably making a crossover event with the X-Men and Fantastic Four in the future.
Catch Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four, which opens to theaters on August 7, 2015.
