Michael Douglas Not Yet Signed On For Ant-Man Sequel

Marvel's recent addition to the rich cinematic universe, "Ant-Man", has seen quite a bit of success from fans and critics alike. It proved a much needed change of pace, featuring different visual styles with its macro photography and using small filming locations perfectly. There's also the solo story that isn't hindered by past films and the use of perfect comedic timing that led the film to be one of the best surprising films to come out from Marvel.

One reason that the movie worked well with the comedy is the obvious humor brought by Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and Michael Pena, who managed to steal every scene that he is in. Of course there's also the great Michael Douglas, a veteran actor who managed to give the film some coherence with his role as Dr. Hank Pym and giving it some sense despite all the funny stuff that's going on. That being said, there is still no confirmation if we will ever see Douglas reprise his role in the inevitable Ant-Man sequel.

Speaking in a recent interview with Yahoo UK, Douglas revealed that he only signed on for the first Ant-Man movie. "I’m not signed up to anything more," Douglas says. "I’ve learned a whole lot and would look forward to more if it comes my way but if not I’ve enjoyed the experience."

Unlike other Marvel films, Douglas signed on way back when Edgar Wright was still attached to direct the film. This was perhaps why there was only one deal made for him when he signed on.

Douglas also talked about the change in the direction and how the script by Adam McKay and star Paul Rudd left Pym with the exposition and explaining the things thathappen in the movie. If he does get signed on for a sequel, he does say that he is willing to come back with his role. According to him:

"Paul and Adam (McKay’s) rewrite bought a lot more humor. I accused Paul of bringing a lot more humor to his character! Michael Pena can take care of himself. I on the other hand was left giving the exposition and the plot, which I was happy to do. In the next one I hope things get a little more bizarre… the Quantum Realm!"

With Michael Douglas on board, there's only the issue of having a release schedule for the film. As of now, Marvel's line-up is pretty crowded so the sequel might be pushed back to as far as 2019 to 2020. There's still the chance that they might move a release date to open up for this one, but it's quite a stretch to think that.

Having Douglas in the film can help continue the story that was set-up in the first film, as in it we see (SPOILERS) Janet Van Dyne, Hank Pym's wife, might still be alive and well in the quantum realm. This means they could be coming for her rescue in the sequel.

While Michael Douglas is still not sure if he will return, Paul Rudd is definitely making an appearance sooner than expected. He will return as Ant-Man in the upcoming film Captain America: Civil War, having already been seen in the filming location of said film. Catch Ant-Man when Civil War opens to theaters in May 6, 2016.
