When you hear of fairy-tales, you would
immediately think of Disney. For years Disney has been synonymous with these
tales, turning these classic stories into animated movies dating back to Snow
White and the Seven Dwarves.
Disney
has also had great success in turning their beloved fairy-tales into a live
action story. We've had Snow White and the Huntsman, Maleficent, and most
recently Cinderella, which was considered a huge financial success. Now we have
yet another Disney classic that is about to be adapted for the big-screen as
The Hollywood Reporter disclosed. According to them, the studio is planning to
develop a prequel to Aladdin. The project is currently titled Genies and is
planned to serve as an origin story for the genie who was famously voiced by
the late Robin Williams in the 1992 animated feature.
Aladdin
is an old Arabic folk tale that was turned into an animated film by Disney back
in 1992. It tells the story of a lowly street urchin who finds a magical lamp
that releases a Genie to grant him three wishes. Several adventures ensue, with
the two meeting a princess and confronting a sorcerer.
This
comedy adventure is said to tell the origin of how the genie ended up inside
the lamp in the first place. It will explore the 'realm of the genies' and is
set to pave the way for a live-action retelling of Aladdin itself.
Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who made their mark working in horror films such
as Freddy vs Jason and Friday the 13th
remake, are attached to write the script for Genies. Tripp Vinson, executive
producer of the summer hit Los Angeles, will produce the film through his
Vinson Films. He is also producing another recently announced Prince Charming
film, that is currently in development through Disney.
Noword of the filming location as of now. The movie is still in development and
probably start production next year. Choosing an exotic filming location for
the film would be a great choice considering the story is set in Arabia, but it
will perhaps be filmed in a studio in order to apply the environment in their
liking.
